During the Guild, students will be able to experience a day at the Grand Canyon of the East. You will marvel at God's spectacular display in numerous waterfalls, stunning rock walls, and the artistic design of this world-renowned state park! There is also a choice of participating in a white-water rafting tour down the Genesee River in the Letchworth canyon (depending on water levels). Rafting is not included in the tuition price. You will have the option to add the tour ($40) on the registration page.
One of the most stunning parks in the Eastern US, Letchworth State Park, the ‘Grand Canyon of the East’, is located in the gently rolling Genesee valley of New York. Roughly 17 miles long, the park is split by the Genesee River gorge, towering up to 600 feet above the winding river bed. As dramatic as the gorge is, it is the waterfalls that steal the show. Letchworth features three major waterfalls, the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls, with nearly fifty more lesser falls scattered throughout the park. The Seneca believed that the Middle Falls was so wondrous that it made the sun stop at midday, and many today consider it to be more beautiful than the famous Niagara Falls.
Trails running along the cliff face offer close-up views of the plunging gorge and river below, and if you keep a sharp eye out you may catch sight of one of the resident bald eagles!
With its unique beauty, it’s not surprising that Letchworth is full of history as well–at one time the home of the Seneca, today it contains the gravesite of Mary Jemison, “The white Indian of the Genesee." The park is named after William Pryor Letchworth, an industrialist who in 1906 bequeathed the 1,000-acre estate that forms the heart of the park to New York State. The historic Glen Iris Inn, Letchworth's former home located on the top of a cliff overlooking Middle Falls, is now a hotel and restaurant. The park is also enhanced by the beautiful stone bridges, stairs, and trails built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression era.
